Jaffrey, NH – On August 14, 2026, at approximately 1:20 p.m., the New Hampshire State Police Dispatch Center notified New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers of a hiker near the upper junction of white dot and white cross trails who was experiencing what was believed to be a life-threatening medical emergency.

Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) park staff, volunteers from the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, and Conservation Officers with New Hampshire Fish and Game responded to the hiker in distress. A DNCR Park Ranger was near the hiker when the original 911 call was placed. Thankfully, they were able to quicky contact the hiker and help stabilize him quickly.

The hiker was identified as 49-year-old Thomas LaValley of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. LaValley was prepared for the hike and had previous hiking experience.

Conservation Officers requested assistance from the New Hampshire Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter. A flight crew was able to assemble and land at a predetermined location on Mount Monadnock near the hiker at approximately 4:10 p.m. The helicopter crew was able to transport LaValley to Elliot Hospital in Manchester where he was evaluated for his medical emergency.
